You can use #Postscript or #LaTeX instead of PDF. But at least one version of #PDF is a free and open format, although not the one currently hawked by Adobe.

@bobjonkman I'm not seeing context, but some #PDF tools (including #Adobe's Acrobat version 10 and 11) allow producing open-standard versions PDF/A and PDF/X. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to get them to default to standardized versions.

@jrm @bobjonkman @lnxw48 PDF is in general a free standardized file format. But often PDFs are produced with Adobe products, mostly in printing related things. With PDF/A or PDF/X3 you are on the safe side.

@vinzv I always thought this was a dirty practice for Adobe to engage in. PDF is much less appealing as a result. :P
