!linux my computer no longer recognizes anything USB3; if I get a new motherboard (which I hope would solve that problem) will I have to re-install linux (currently Debian)? I have no idea what to expect... #ihatehardware

Make sure you have USB3 compatible cables that haven't failed in mysterious ways. Someone in @GTALUG had that problem not so long ago: http://gtalug.org/pipermail/talk/2015-October/002133.html

@bobjonkman good point, I'll see if I can test with an extra cable - but it's not just that: a flash drive in a USB3 port directly on the computer also isn't detected, and neither is my brand-new RAID box. So I think it's the hardwar…

@mk @bobjonkman A few years ago, I had USB3.0 hardware that required a newer than then-current #Debian kernel to work.
-
@mk You shouldn't have to reinstall Debian. What version are you using - Jessie? Wheezy?
-
@windigo I'm using the latest testing - is that Jessie now? (I'm bad at remembering names.) I'm asking because I wonder to what extent the installed system is 'adapted' to the hardware detected during installation. I don't want to en…

@mk Jessie is the current Stable; not sure what testing is called. :)

@mk Last time I checked, Debian still installed a lot of "base" drivers that make most hardware functional, making a switch pretty easy.

@lnxw48 oh, disappointing! But my hardware did work, though there always seemed to be grumbles during boot before it finally did work. Last weekend it all started deteriorating during a series of boot attempts until nothing USB3 worked any more.
-
@windigo well, anyway, it's about as new as you can get ;-)
-
@mk Careful, the Arch guys are going to jump on that statement! :D
