i believe it's the web interface. so many things are jammed into a browser these days and that's what people go for. can't access it in a browser? people don't want it.

then a decentralized web would have a good web interface to IRC — but not a centralized service. Freenode for example has webchat: https://webchat.freenode.net/?randomnick=1&channels=freenet (but that does not look great)

@drak wechat with glowing bear seems to work well along these lines but it's still a lot of setup. Several of the users on #libernil use those two.

I think XMPP may be a superior protocol to IRC, though it's a little difficult to find conference bridges. I'm surprised that Kaiwa didn't gain much traction: http://getkaiwa.com/

A web interface is a program — just one you neither own nor control and which others can change at any time.
