@mcscx also: Harbin, on my list of Chinese cities to visit - would I survive this? http://www.sueddeutsche.de/leben/bilder-des-tages-momentaufnahmen-im-oktober-1.1785607-40 !photography

@mk Smog=smoke+fog. Maybe just a foggy weather situation. The smoke part maybe toxic without looking spectacular though.
-
@mcscx I don't think it's "just a foggy weaather situation" - smogs are getting more frequent and heavier in all Chinese cities. October used to be a time of clear skies, a good time to visit China... I'll definitely need my allergy medicine if I go there :( Frankly, it scares me!
-
@mk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin#Pollution Pollution seems to originate from coal heating.
-
@mcscx that's one (diminishing) factor; fast increasing numbers of cars and industry are getting more important factors (industry around Beijing was stopped too, for the 2008 Olympics, and car traffic halved by allowing everyone to drive only every other day)
-
@mcscx geographical factors add to it, for instance Beijing lies in a 'bowl' between mountains, so the air can be stationary for log periods
-
@mcscx yes, it varies by city - but for instance Shanghai gets heavy smog, too. Anyway, I may need to plan it so I start in Harbin *before* the heating is turned on and by the time I get in the South it will be October/November. #NewPerspectives

@mcscx scary! (they do not mention exhausts from vehicles - not just cars - but that's more local inside cities)
-
@mk is there a big difference between vehicles and cars?
-
@mcscx of course - a car is just one type of vehicle. in Chinese cities you'll also find tuk-tuks for example, and many other types of vehicles in rural areas
