You should read this, if only to see a reasonable use of the phrase "some other unresearched hippie voodoo nonsense that are either wrong or too dumb to rise to the level of wrong." http://exple.tive.org/blarg/2013/10/22/citation-needed/ (why do programmers start counting at zero?) !hacks

0-based indexing means not having to change numbers in slices: a[:1] + a[1:] == a and len(a[n:n+length]) == length. Pure fuzzy UI preference.

@mhoye also writes "I was in favor of Open Access publication before, but writing this up has cemented it…“$20 for a forty-year-old research paper” is functionally indistinguishable from “gone”" http://exple.tive.org/blarg/2013/10/22/citation-needed/ !free !fs !freeculture

I don’t really care if @mhoye is 100% correct (or even 100% wrong) about this – telling people that “yacht-racing influenced zero-based indexing code optimization” makes a great story, and is a terrific teaching aid when introducing people to the idea of counting from zero. I wish I’d known this a couple of weeks ago. At the time I just hand-waved away zero-indexing by saying “just because programmers do things like that”. Yacht-racing would have made for a better lecture. Thanx for adding another anecdote to our mythology!
