It's the same reason the default LaTeX article output "wastes" a lot of space on margins.

It’s not that simple. Experiments show that reading 100 character lines is as fast as reading 60 character lines. But there’s a drawback: At some point you WILL want to send some of your code by email. And that breaks at 76 chars. With 2 levels of quoting you want 72 chars max.

I agree. It's not as simple as I made it sound. Maybe, web pages should have no margins and leave it entirely up to the browser's "Reader mode".

if that were working well, that would be great, but half the story of webdesign is "the default style is not good enough"
