@mk what is the dongle modem model you used when you were in Sri Lanka? I am having a nightmare finding one that works with linux :(
-
@lg oh, that's a maze of models and sub models... let me see if I can find it.
-
Thanks a lot!
-
@lg OK, it's the HUAWEI E3131s-2 Dongle; see http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/downloadCenter.do?method=toDownloadFile&flay=document&softid=NDY3MTU= - a driver (they provide one) is NOT necessary, a modern Linux kernel already has support for it built-in. Confusing: the "mode switch" (from USB stick mode to modem mode) will happen only with a SIM card inside that can find a connection.
-
Thanks loads! This saves me lot of time! Will get one tomorrow :)
-
@lg check Dialog's offer - they have dongles, too - but do ask if it's unlocked!
-
The one I purchased fails even though they promised it will work on Linux (PROLINK PHS300)
-
@lg I found this: http://www.geeklk.com/2013/02/prolink-phs300-dongle-on-ubuntu/ - it might help
-
@lg I found loads of confusing info about the HUAWEI, too, but in the end it "just worked"
-
I found that article and I've been trying it all day, in the end it asks for the APN (ebb) username and password and my current service provider's customer support people are unaware of these details :( They keep telling me it isn't necessary. And they know only about Windows
-
@lg I used this #ddg search and that result came up top, but there is more, just in case: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22PROLINK+PHS300%22+Linux
-
@lg did you try not entering it? it may indeed not be necessary
-
I just got another recommendation from a local linux user about another HUAWEI modle (Huwawi E220) . So I assume they must be Linux friendly... Appsarently they just work.
-
@lg they "just work" because Linux has support built-in (at least modern kernels do); if not, there are ways to find/set a mode line
-
I tried not entering it, and every other possible way. I think I'll just take the laptop, test it and buy tomorrow...
-
@lg I think that's an older model - it may not support the faster 3.75 speed, so do check!
-
@lg more possible clues here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1350525&page=4&p=10870984#post10870984

I recently switched to #debian . Does it mean if I use a more recent kernal, such as the one provided with #fedora is likely to solve the problem? #justasking #thinkingaloud
-
@lg #debian #fedora no it should work already; I am using it on #CrunchBang and will try it with #Fedora soon
-
@lg strange - I found reports from people who are using it with Linux, so it must at least be _possible_; you'll need an APN for any dongle though, though - depending on provider - maybe not a user name
-
Finally, found a modem that works! HUAWEI E1762 :) All I had to do was plug and connect!
-
@lg yay!! congratulations!
