#Kubuntu CD image, 707 MiB. Empty CD in the institute: 702 MiB capacity. What the hell‽ !kde !fs (#Ubuntu: 733MiB…)

@drak use overburning :-) on a side note: many distros stopped caring about cd size, cause a lot of ppl just use usb sticks nowadays
-
@drak I had the same issues with Xubuntu over Christmas break. I'm not sure if overburn helps, or if USB install is required now...
-
@cyberkiller @windigo @deBaer: Do you know how to get the [XK]ubuntu to install a bootable system on an external 2 TiB USB disk?
-
@windigo Xubuntu is only 688MIB, so it fit the CD (that’s what I used). But the disk does not boot… I’m tempted to configure it from Gentoo…
-
@drak I think that might be your problem. The Xubuntu ISO I have is 835M... for Xubuntu 13.10 Desktop x86, at least.
-
@cyberkiller @deBaer @drak Do you want to install from a 2TB external, or do you want your root filesystem installed to the 2TB disk?
-
@windigo I want the root filesystem on the 2 TiB USB-disk.
-
@drak Does it not allow you to pick it in the installer? If you do try it, you might want to unplug your main drive just to be safe...
-
@drak I'd try dd'ing the hybrid iso to the usb drive as usual, it should install from it normally
-
@windigo I could select it, but it did not boot. And I think I found out why: Xubuntu used a GPT partition table - found with fdisk. /CC @cyberkiller @mararm
-
I now got Kubuntu on the external disk: format with fdisk (no GPT, 1GiB /boot, 8GiB swap 100GiB /, rest /home), boot Xubuntu CD (smaller iso), manual partitioning (just select partitions as /boot, …, don’t change them), install, boot, then apt-get install kubuntu-desktop.
-
@cyberkiller @windigo @mararm @deBaer Thank you for helping me get Kubuntu on the external disk! It works → http://sn.1w6.org/notice/46277
-
@drak congratulations ;-) can you explain why GPT is a problem?
-
@mararm GPT is a problem because old tools and old BIOSes don’t recognize it. Never break backwards compatibility if not *really* necessary…
