@mk best avoid proprietary NAS devices (Seagate...) where you can't take the disks out and access them from a Linux/BSD box. Better: FreeNAS

@mk you can take the disks out but Seagate NASes store the files in a nested LVM, maybe encrypted.

@mk you should be able to use VNC + SSH tunnel easily on the Mac, as ssh and vnc clients are already preinstalled. But I've never tried.

@mcscx oh, that's good :) but can you do that without leaving anything on the host machine?

@mk I can't guarantee that. On Windows plink asks whether you want to store sth in registry->always say no to that.

@mk in general if you need to make sure you don't leave _any trace_ on someone's pc you probably must use a live cd

@mk otherwise you may leave subtle traces on the system that can be digged out by foresic analysis

@mk additionally on someone else's pc there's a possibility of keyloggers and hidden screenshot spyware, maybe without the owner's knowledge
