oh, lovely - after all that effort to make neat cabling and finally plugging everything in... Marie just doesn't want to turn on :(
-
@mk probably power supply. Other possibilities: Broken mainboard, or even weak BIOS/clock battery. Or a problem with the new cabling!
-
@mcscx thanks; for BIOS/clock battery I would expect it to come on, and give me a POST error code. Or for missing keyboard / mouse. But the led on the power-on button doesn't even come on; and other devices on the same set of outlets are powered.
-
@mk It's weird but I've seen boards that seemed to be totally dead because of dead battery. Also try disconnecting the pc for some hours
-
@mcscx hmm - it's been turned off since early April (when I departed for my South-East Europe trip) -that may make a dead battery a more likely cause. I'll call a repair man tomorrow and hear what he says...
-
@mk did you do new mains power cabling? In that case check if you hear the usual short brizzl sound when connecting the power plug to Marie
-
@mcscx yes I did - but... "usual short brizzl sound"??? now I'm #confuzzled. I *never* hear any sound when connecting a power cable. Just what is supposed to make that sound? And what about other things running off the same mains powe…
-
@mk When connecting a computer power supply to mains there'll be a _small_ spark you can usually hear if your ear is trained. :-)
-
@mcscx interesting, but I've *never* heard that! even if by now I may have small loss of hearing for some tones, I've not ever heard that in the past either. So, anyway, for me it's out as a diagnostic
-
@mcscx just called computer repair man Andre - he agrees it's most likely the power supply, will come over next Tuesday.
-
@mcscx before calling, I also tested connecting it to a totally different outlet - no sound, no juice... :(
-
@mcscx can a power supply be switched off when the machine is on? ;-)
-
@mk the machine is on? I though it doesn't switch on?
-
@mcscx no, I merely wish it were on! or could be switched on, whether the power supply is switched on or not :p
-
@mk the on/off switch most PCs have next to the power socket.Just wondering if the prob can be related to you having moved and the recabling
