@bobjonkman does have some valid points in my opinion. I have found at one point to have lost sight if the local. I now am more involved in local things but not by reading the newspaper but by talking to neighbours and looking at the flyers…

I think this is rather about something else: In the image, reading newspapers was portrayed as being like reading your smartphone. But their effect is different: You get background on news your real life communication partners will discuss.

What the image shows is how people get daily news - in Germany that’s i.e. by watching the Tagesschau. Next morning that will be the discussion topic during the tea break. Everyone has an opinion on that. That’s not true for my GNU social feed—that gives me “exclusive” background

the difference is that you discuss with *me* instead of with the people in your physical vicinity. That’s a huge difference which can fragment society.

This can also allow people to move forward even though their local environment does not share their interests, but it is a mixed blessing.
