@gomerx At one point #NSA or maybe #DARPA was assisting #OpenBSD. I don't know whether it was funding or code, but they had a public split around the time of the 2nd US-Iraq war.

@roland The firmware in a $5 flash drive virtualizes the whole drive (to spread writes out and slow down wear). Why would #NSA or its equivalent not think to do something similar with a hard drive's firmware?

@simsa0 In some cases, the #NSA has ordered private companies to collect more data, so it would be available to them. It is not private sector spying evil, public sector spying good, just as the reverse is not true. Both of them need to be restricted simultaneously.
