When all that was done, I also grabbed a new ISO for the SystemRescueCD - the one I used was fine, but almost 3 years old. ;-) They use Gentoo, with lots of tools (including gvim and TestDisk), and a XFCE DE (with Gparted and Geany, and some two-pane File Manager I'd not used before but is fine). All very lightweight but very easy to work with for repairs.
