@stigatle For #FreeBSD #Ports https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/porters-handbook/ the porters handbook. If you have build it, it should be install able (on other machines, like a ports proxy) using pkg add / pka_add.

I guess I should back up the data on the #Crunchbang laptop. Considering installing #Gentoo, #Fedora, pure #Debian, #Mageia, or something based on #Arch. Could also see whether #FreeBSD likes that hardware.

@imojito True, for another well known init system then systemd there is only Gentoo and FreeBSD. At the moment I have a working power management on my MacBook Pro using #FreeBSD powerd and apm -z ... so, no need for systemd.

@chemaalonso Windows is good to earn money. Gnome 3 is not bad but I hate systemd thats why I run at the moment #FreeBSD / Linux Mint (LMDE - Debian based) ... at the end, there are so many good GNU tools to solve things.

@erkan Gentoo needs time. Same as if you use #FreeBSD rebuild the kernel, the userland and use the ports tree. But at the end you know in booth systems whats in it.

I found out, that the powermanagement in #FreeBSD works on my MacBook Pro without SMC (System Management Console) support ... better then under Linux.

Ahh, ... yes, PC-BSD was the only BSD which boots on my hardware but after installing it, it was very slow. The normal #FreeBSD works (also with internet) now, so I will give it a try as native OS. Brings me more near to the point, to have only 1 OS around me.

@nawi No, I used #FreeBSD on servers years ago, but I never tried it as a desktop. I did play with something called #PC-BSD inside #VMWare, but that was only for a short time.

@lnxw48 Have you tried #FreeBSD as desktop OS ? I downloaded today #FreeBSD 10.1 RC 3 with the UEFI fix ... and it boots (was the first disc beside PCBSD) without problems on my MacBook Pro 2012 ... including USB tehthering with a Android phone.

@nawi As for #FreeBSD, I used it server-side about 10-12 years back. I loved it. Seemed to be more well thought out than any other OS I’ve used. But when I got hired by $EMPLOYER, #Windows is what we use, so that’s where most of my time goes.
