Unfortunately, according to IRC, it doesn't work well with mainline #ssb because of node JSON peculiarities. Type the wrong emoji and other nodes start rejecting your feed. :-(

I actually find #ssb reusing the old radio initialism quite appropriate. The feeling of the decentralized social network is rather HAM-radio-like.

People do "anything beyond demos" every day on #ssb. The social network aspect, posting text and pictures and commenting, is fully functional, and there's potential for more.
