I just reworked my article on technical advantages of the !Hurd → http://sn.1w6.org/url/306 !fs !libre

That's weird. I booted debian-hurd-20130504.img today. Sadly, Hurd and HurdNG never went anywhere.

@drak thx for this article. I think it's important to not only rely/focus on Linux but good to have other kernels & GNU/*nix environments.

@zoowar I have Debian GNU/Hurd and Debian GNU/kFreeBSD on my agenda, too. Seems you weren't too impressed with the Hurd?

What do you mean by “never went anywhere”? The !Hurd works pretty well today, and there are only 2 missing pieces which keep me from using it as my main system: USB support (I have a USB keyboard and my bios does not seem to do the USB→PS2 translation…) and sound (I *need* music). See http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd/status.html Different from 10 years ago, the Hurd nowadays is stable enough to build all its own packages - and the Hurd Wiki has already been hosted on the Hurd itself for at least 5 years. Core developers currently use Hurd on KVM, because the page cache of the Hurd is still substandard and KVM allows for reusing the Linux page cache → Linux is being used as a hardware abstraction layer :) !fs !libre

And I don’t think performance is an issue today. Most program performance is limited either by network latency or by disk latency. For general computation the few percent overhead of the !Hurd compared to #Linux won’t hurt. If you want a few numbers, there’s a test for that on Phoronix: http://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=debian_gnu_hurd&num=1

Interesting things for the !Hurd include using #Linux Device drives but running them in userspace (that’s already done for network devices). For other things - you already read the article :) → http://draketo.de/light/english/free-software/some-technical-advantages-of-the-hurd

One nice testament of the efficiency of the structure of the !Hurd is that it is now working pretty well even though it only had about 6 people hacking at it in their free time for the last >10 years.

Here are the release notes for the current release of the !Hurd: http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/news/2013-05-debian_gnu_hurd_2013.html — in case you want a quick update.

I just realized that you likely just read those release notes — given that you booted the image referenced there :)

No greater testament of irrelevance than this.

what do you mean by irrelevance? (maybe we have a different definition of that term)
