What do you mean by “never went anywhere”? The !Hurd works pretty well today, and there are only 2 missing pieces which keep me from using it as my main system: USB support (I have a USB keyboard and my bios does not seem to do the USB→PS2 translation…) and sound (I *need* music). See http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd/status.html Different from 10 years ago, the Hurd nowadays is stable enough to build all its own packages - and the Hurd Wiki has already been hosted on the Hurd itself for at least 5 years. Core developers currently use Hurd on KVM, because the page cache of the Hurd is still substandard and KVM allows for reusing the Linux page cache → Linux is being used as a hardware abstraction layer :) !fs !libre
