@drak refute which argument? GPL is really not an appropriate license for a font - in spite of the fact that people are using it. (in the same way, there are people who apply a CC license to source code, which is also not appropriate). For fonts, there are different possible licenses, of which IPA and SIL (OFL) are relevant. what is even more important is that a font is a combination of design elements (glyphs, usually vector but possibly bitmaped) and software that controls how it is rendered. For that reason, some fonts are licensed SIL (for the code) *and* a CC license (for the images contained in the font), which makes it possible to use 'just' as a font (covered by SIL) or extract one or more images and use those *as* images (covered by CC).

@drak Interesting, but none of those seem to be icon fonts, so they are not of real interest to me now. Not saying anything about quality or usability, I haven't looked at their glyphs, let alone such things as kerning.
-
@drak yes - because the GPL does not actually say anything about bundling non-programs with programs. I went through their whole FAQ. If you know of a better way to 'combine' or 'collect' programs together with icon files or fonts containing icons, let me know. I *think* I can make a bundle and precisely describe which part is under which license, but IANAL... I do not want end users to jump through hoops to get the parts together just because they are each under open licenses for different types of work

@drak I'd rather say: When we lose government, government is lost. ;-)

@drak Please be more specific: which screenshot (new or existing) should I place at which page?
-
@drak besides there is not a single theme for a web application or website that does NOT refer to fonts.
-
@drak GPL is not a good license for images; but bundling images or fonts with software is not unusual. and like I said one could even just link to it and provide an installer script to set up the combination (with a choice of fonts, even). You can always download the font on its own and use its glyphs, too.
-
@drak not sure there's a problem - if I were to use the font in my theme, I'd just be bundling it, or if necessary simply linking to it; an installer script could take care of the rest. And I could release my own variant of the font (if I were to make one) the same way - with an installer script.

@drak So true. Haven't been argueing against encryption tools. Just think that using tools alone will not make power inequalities disappear
