All users on smaller nodes experience this. It is less visible on larger nodes (otherwise, it would have been fixed when 99% of people used #Identica and @Evan's company hosted almost all SN instances).

I'm not sure. I seem to remember that #identica stopped using it because response rates (and therefore funds generated) were lower than with #Google. But shortly after switching (back?) to bigG, Evan pulled the plug on ads entirely. At that point, collapse was inevitable.
